DUBAI — The Dubai Criminal Court yesterday commenced the trial of Bangalore-based fashion designer Prasad Bidappa who was arrested on June 12 at the Dubai International Airport on charges of possessing drugs.

Two Britons free of fraud charges

DUBAI — The Dubai Court of Appeal has acquitted two British citizens — 43-year-old Keneb Navin and 49-year old Herman R. — from embezzlement of Dh16.6 million. Fadi M., a wealthy man, had submitted before the court that he gave the two accused the authority to manage a partnership company and invest his money in profitable ways. Fadi complained to the police that his partners had fabricated the financial statement for the fiscal year 2002/2003. They showed that the company had suffered losses. The Court of First Instance had acquitted the two accused and rejected Fadi’s complaint.

Insurance claim of widow and son rejected

DUBAI — After hearing testimonies of the plaintiff and arguments of the defence lawyers, and reviewing the necessary documents pertaining to the claim of a widow and her son, Bojwandas Kishabji, who demanded a sum of $50,000 — equivalent to Dh183, 500 from the Alliance Insurance Company — the Dubai Civil Court has turned down their case and cancelled the insurance contracts.

Several hotels and companies taken for a ride

DUBAI — The Dubai Grand Hotel in Al Quasis, Sea World Tourism and at least two other companies including a car rental agency have been taken for a ride by an alleged conman who goes by the name Ebrahim Al Vijjala, and claims he is the General Manager of Al Kamzari Trading Company.

Injured Indian seeks justice against firm

DUBAI — An Indian, who was injured at work and subsequently sanctioned six-week medical leave, returned to work only to find himself on the streets after a month. His employer had shown him the door for no apparent reason.
